Exploring Green Acres - A Horseback Jungle Expedition
Located in the heart of the citrus belt and on the foothills of the Maya Mountains- Green Acres is a 300 acre private jungle park where your horseback expedition will explore golden citrus orchards & cocoa fields, ride through unexcavated Mayan ruins, cross cold rivers, and climb a mystic mountain. After the Jungle tour a farm-fresh grilled lunch awaits you under a palapa that sits on the banks of the Sibun River. Swimming is optional as long as it’s before lunch. Your tour guide points out and elaborates on flora and fauna as well as many landmarks along the way.
Cave Tubing
Cave Tubing is one of the most exhilarating shore excursions offered in Belize. Cave tubing is done with an inflatable tube, a headlight and a guide who takes you through two complete cave systems that lie in the heart of the Belizean jungle. Before getting to the cave tubing start you will get to hike through the lush tropical forest where your guide will point out any flora & fauna of interest. You will be hiking through the jungle and up & down some mild hills until arriving at the starting point where you can ease yourself in the water or jump right in from the cliff. The extra cool & clear waters of the Sibun river will alert your senses and let you know that the adventure is about to begin. Your headlight will assist you in navigating through the caves as the river current pushes you along. ‘Pitch black’ darkness, cold water, echoes, an internal waterfall and mild river rapids are all what makes this tour Belize’s number one tour. Maya Explorations
Altun Ha
Explore the ancient ruins of the mysterious city of Altun Ha which was occupied around 200BC. to 900AD. One of the smallest and yet most important trading centers in Belize, Altun Ha is where the revered jade head was found – a 10lb jade elaborately carved into the head of the Maya Sun God, Kinich Ahau. The jade head, now a national treasure, sits under heavy security in a local vault. Exploring and climbing these ruins one will surely feel overwhelmed by the ancient architecture as well as the enchanting buildings and landscape. Altun Ha which lies approximately 30 miles north of Beize occupies around 8 sq. km and lies about 6miles west of the Caribbean seashore. The largest temple, temple of the Masonry Altars is 54 ft high and a drawing of this temple is the logo for Belize’s national beer. This ancient archeological wonder of Altun Ha is only one hour from Belize City and has level terrain for comfortable walking. This tour is 3 hours in length.
Lamanai
Occupied as early as 16th century BC, the city of Lamanai was once a sizeable city and has a rich history. Spanish conquistadores (conquerors) established a Roman Catholic church during the conquest of Yucatan but a Maya revolt drove them away. The Mask Temple, The temple of the Jaguar Masks and the High Temple are must sees especially the High temple which at 125 ft high affords a spectacular view of the historic city, the New River and sometimes even families of howler monkeys that live in the nearby canopies. To access Lamanai you must travel one hour by land north of Belize City after which a mystical boat ride will take you through the rainforest for a nature filled river safari. Orchids, crocodiles, birds, overhanging trees, lush tropical scenery and much more fauna make the hour ride go by quickly after which you will arrive at Lamanai. The entire tour is 6 hours.
Xunantunich
Located in the splendid and mountainous Cayo district, (western Belize) and only 1.5 hours away, Xunantunich has one of the tallest structures in Belize at 135ft high (El Castillo). The city of xunantunich sits within view of the Guatemalan border which can be seen from atop the highest temple. Its name translates into ‘stone woman’ which comes from the ghost of a woman allegedly seen by early inhabitants. Like most sites, the original name of the city is unknown. With 6 plazas and countless temples, Xunantunich has some of the most detailed sculptures and is a must see. The travel to Xunantunich takes you over rivers and up to the mountainous Cayo district where a local hand-cranked river ferry is crossed to get to the site. This tour is 6 hours in length.
